Although I have and continue to make functional pottery, I specialize in figurative sculptures. Working in Raku clay, I sculpt the form, fire it to bisqueware and then paint it with underglazes, and do a final firing.
I never know who may emerge as I work. For example, I was creating a Caucasian business man wearing a suit and tie. However, there was an African queen with blue dreadlocks who insisted on being born. She is one of my favorite characters now.
